In writing my books I did a lot of research on Yosemite, in spite of having spent many months there in my younger years. One of the most gratifying ways to visit Yosemite now is via Amtrak. Catch the train in Oakland around 9 AM, arrive in Merced around noon. There you transfer to a bus, about 10 steps away, for a very interesting and informative drive to the front door of your lodging choice, be it Camp Curry, The Lodge or the Ahwahnee. Arriving early mid-afternoon. You do not need a car in Yosemite to get around. Jitneys everywhere. Overnite or several nites, I think it's the way to go, and it helps preserve the Valley.
